Drought now affects half of England
In any area of the UK there are two organisations who have responsibility for assessing the effect of rainfall (or lack of it). The Environment Agency who take a nationwide view and plan for the long-term; and the individual Water Companies who are responsible for the continuing supply of water in their area.
The hosepipe bans are imposed by the water companies and the existing bans will probably remain in place until the end of the year. No new bans have been announced as at 2nd May 2012. The Environment Agency has announced two new drought areas: The South West region (Cornwall to South Gloucestershire) and the Midlands area covering East and West Midlands counties. So far no hosepipe bans here.
Drip irrigation is usually permitted in the ban areas provided it is controlled by a timer and pressure reducer.
Fast Leak Soaker Hose: Waters efficiently from a water butt or container. It has been developed to work at low pressure and allows more water to pass through for irrigation than standard soaker hose. It drips along its length directly into the root system and is best slightly buried or in contact with the soil with mulch over the top. It comes in two lengths 7.5m and 20m. Use a water butt timer to control the duration of watering. (Not to be used under mains pressure).
In Line Drippers are a quick way of setting up a drip watering system either for pots or for border plants and vegetables. Use 2L/Hr drippers for smaller plants and pots and 4L/Hr drippers for larger ones. May be used with mains pressure and comply with drought orders if used with a timer. A pressure reducer may be necessary.
Raised Beds save water and weeding as they keep your plants to a specific area. This can be kept moist by our Aquabox Spyder whose water is supplied by a water butt or container. This is then distributed under the soil by wicks, thus minimising evaporation.
Our raised beds are a manageable 1m x 1.2m (3' 3" x 4') and we supply hoops with pest-proof netting (strawberry grower) and polythene covers (mini greenhouse) for an ideal growing environment. One Aquabox automatically waters this area from a water butt or container, no timer is necessary.
